Heartworm Prevention Tablets- Split with two dogs?

I have two boston terriers who are below 15 pounds each. I just noticed that the heartworm prevention I got from the vet which I have been using for a couple of months is for dogs 26-50lbs. Should I continue giving them a whole tab or should I split it in half? I would prefer answers not from someone like me who is just guessing but from a vet, a tech, or someone who has done this in the past with an o.k. from their vet. Thanks!

Heartworm Prevention Tablets- Split with two dogs?
Call your vet for the correct answer on this. You could be under dosing the dogs and that will be them at high risk. Your vet will know exactly what to do.
Reply:Good girl! It it always best to ask your vet where these things matter! Report It

Reply:If you're looking for answers from a vet, is there a reason that you're asking this HERE instead of, say, calling your vet and asking them?
Reply:We used to do that with our dogs and the vet said it was fine.
Reply:I wouldn't split them. I have had this conversation with my vet and the dosage is different. Call and see if you can get the right dosage.
Reply:You need to buy the correct strength heartworm prevention pills for each dog, because if they get the wrong strength, it can make them sick. Splitting them in half might still be too strong.
Reply:Not all pills have equal amounts distributed on each side of the pill. Check with a vet.

It only takes a few minutes to call.

I highly doubt a vet gets on yahoo answers to answer questions all day long.

sorry it that sounds mean!
Reply:And you haven't called your vet why? If you have the wrong dosage, usually they will let you trade out (if the package is unopened) with no additional fees. I do believe it is definately better to get the right dosage for the dogs rather than to split what they have. It's not worth the risk of underdosing. But definately do what YOUR vet says, they are the ones with the most experience with your specific dogs. Moreover, the smaller doses are often cheaper. I also have two dogs of approximately the same weight, I get a six month supply and split it between the two (making it a three month supply in reality). This is a little easier than forking out a ton of money at once every six or twelve months.

If your pets aren't worth a few extra bucks to maintain their health, then why do you have them? What's more important, your pets, or your cash? Keep in mind that if they are underdosed they can contract heartworms and usually it is fatal for dogs. At best it's extremely expensive and painful.

Usually when a doctor or vet tells you to cut a pill in half, it's when you have to take both halves within a 24-hr period. The reason is that you can't guarantee you'll get the exact same dose from both halves. A full dose may be too much for the stomach at once, so they have you split it up because the manufacturer doesn't provide smaller doses as an option.
Reply:I do animal rescue and have for years. My vet often sells me medicine and tick preventive medicine for larger dogs and has told me how to break the dosage down for smaller dogs. It keeps my cost of rescuing down and for that I appreciate it. Splitting the tablet in half is the right thing to do. If you ever are concerned, a quick call to your vet is always a good answer.
Reply:any experts n field of dog industries was prevent their dogs from infect by mosquito ...and heart pudge ...... by pets infect controller with heatrguard or interseptic inject........ but interseptic wil coz phycology crashing in between 10 in 1 vaccination and interseptic ........so heartguard is a betterway to kill heartworm there was growing inside dog's body ....... there separed to three type : small breed (blue) ,medium (green) ,..... and large (brown) .... your dog two is boston terrier sould be taken small\blue in color for monthly..... and you should giving whole tablet but not half........ there is a effective way to kill heartworm..... not matter how either experts also can't prove her dog is safe in their enviroment ..... thank for reading
Reply:I'm thinking that the Vet gave you the amount for larger dogs with the intention of you splitting one in half, but he should have told you. My Vet has done the same. Definitely, call your vet and tell him you are giving your dogs almost 3 times the dose. This could be very hazardous to your dogs. I have had the ok from my Vet to use a few drops of K-9Advantix on my Shih Tzu puppy and use the rest of the tube on my 3 yr old Lhasa Apso. Please inform your Vet ASAP that you are giving a very high dose to a small dog!!!!!
Reply:Split it!! Don't give them added chemicals they don't need.
Reply:If you are talking about the Heartgard chew-ables, do not split them. The medication is injected into the chew, so the medication may not be equally distributed through out the tablet. So one dog could end up receiving all the medication and the other could end up with none. Splitting up a larger vial of flea prevention is completely different, because the medication is evenly dispersed though out the liquid.
Reply:Split it.
Reply:I would say that splitting it would be fine.

  1. pull up the components on line with in the med. For istance with people meds such as Augmentin it has several components one is the Amoxicillan at say 500mg, and then it has another component called clavuate potassium. if you split the pill you do get what your supposed to get in the Amox (350 mbg each side) but not of the CLavuate. They want you to have the full amount each pill of that, but when you half it, thats what you get. each does needs the fullamount of it. SOunds weird but there is a bunch of meds for people that are like that. Anyway, the comments here abut asking your vet???? Are you all just out there on that? You dont think they have an interest in selling these items and money involved and on the line? No asking your vet about this stuff will get mainly varying answers. Ask someone who knows meds and can interpret the inserts in the boxes. Its my advice and Im sticking to it:)
