“Prevention is better than cure”. Out of the health budget a large proportion should be diverted from treatment to spending on health, education and preventive measures. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Prevention is cheaper than cure, definitely. The problem is prevention often requires lifestyle changes in the population that the population is not willing to make. (Smoking cessation, more exercise, better diet, etc.). Therefore, while prevention spending might be more cost effective in the long run, you have to have prevention spending that is effective in making people change behaviors.

Good question,

Reply:I disagree completely
Reply:It would be ideal if we could instigate preventative measures. Better for the economy and better for people. I would rather be healthy and remain healthy than sick and then cured.

Interesting question. Thanks for posting it.

Reply:i totally agree - prevention, in the long run, means less treatment will be needed and therefore the government can spend money on more important things like education which makes people aware of what to prevent. think about it - injections to prevent measles, cervical cancer etc have probably saved 1000's of peoples lives already - imagine if this prevention wasnt taken!
Reply:This is great public policy, it will drastically cut costs and relieve needless suffering. Unfortunately it will cut profits to drug companies and is therefore Un-American. Keep saying things like this and you will be hung for treason.
Reply:I agree but the doctors wouldn't. They would not make so much money if people weren't ill.
Reply:nice thinking!
Reply:In Australia we have things like needle exchange programs for drug addicts and give condoms to blokes in jail, we also have less Aids than the US.

It is no good letting false morality stand in the way of practicality.
Reply:i agree...but its better safe than 2 die....( equally give a fair ratio on both ..)
