Loss prevention detective?

boscov's is hiring a loss prevention detective. What is this and what do they do?

Loss prevention detective?
Loss prevention detective is a fancy name for what essentially is just an internal security guard for the store. I've heard loss prevention officer before, but never detective.

Basically, you maintain surveillance of people via CCTV (closed circuit television) and observe the offenses occur. Depending on how many people are on duty with you, you would want another to maintain a visual on the floor, and radio what you observe. Once the suspect makes it out of the doors to the store, the crime is complete and are subject to arrest.

Once the arrest is made, you would want to complete a written report for officers who respond, and make a copy of the surveillance if it's available.

In other instances, I get calls from stores, because they were investigating internal losses. Most of the time the internal losses are due to employees giving away items, or stealing money. Those people are arrested for embezzlement by loss prevention once enough info is gathered for an arrest. Afterward, officers are called to complete a report.

The thing is, different stores vary widely in policy of who can pursue, if you can fight a suspect, or chase them out of the store. I know Kohl's has a terrible policy. They cant really do anything, and have to call in "Pending" thefts. Just for info, officers don't really respond to "Pending" thefts. Target, they cant chase people out of the store, and if they resist, are supposed to stand down. The most kick *** loss prevention I see is from Mervyn's and JC Penny. Those people will chase you down, beat you up, and get you and their merchandise back, even if they have to chase you a few city blocks, I've seen it lol.

It's a descent job from what I've seen, and if you are interested in law enforcement, it gives you a small insight into what is required of the job.
Reply:Watch for shoplifters and investigate any missing property from the store.
Reply:Their main job is to observe and detain shoplifters. They also investigate allegations of internal theft.
